Unprecedented advances in information technology, including improvements in both wired and wireless global telecommunications networks, are providing ever more opportunities for the United Nations to operate as a truly global and integrated Secretariat. Appropriately deployed, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) renders the Organization more effective and efficient in carrying out its work and adapting to changing environments across the globe.
By strategically harnessing the power of such technology, the Organization can accelerate the realization of its mission and meet growing commitments in an increasingly knowledge-based and interconnected global society.
The Office of the CITO is responsible for bringing together the best and most appropriate information technology available, with the information processing needs of the Organization. In doing so it ensures that management priorities are understood and acted on, so that more urgent and more strategic needs are adequately serviced.
