Objective:

Establish ICT greening policies and practices to reduce waste of energy and paper supplies.

Description:

This initiative is to prepare ICT Green Policy Document (ST/SGB and/or AI) and circulate across the UN Secretariat. Among other things the policy document shall cover the following:
• Recommended standards for environmental friendly ICT equipment
• Guidelines on replacement and disposal of old equipment
• Procedures to implement double sided printing and other measures to reduce paper consumption
• Consolidation of equipment / server rooms to save energy
• Use of green energy sources
• Electronic dissemination of documents instead of distributing hard copies

Scope:

The policy document will be issued to all UN Departments, Offices Away Headquarters, Field Missions, Regional Commissions and Tribunals.

Output:

Comprehensive ICT Green Policy Document issued

Impact:

Successful completion of this initiative will reduce paper and power consumption and encourage the greening initiatives. This will reiterate the United Nations’ commitment on green measures and improve the organizations image. End users will have environmental friendly working environment.

Implementation approach and timeline:

  • Collect and review any existing guidelines, circulars, related materials, industry practices etc. on green measures
  • Prepare Draft ICT Green Policy document
  • Submit the Draft document to ICT Managers for comments
  • Update the draft document based on ICT managers’ comments
  • Seek necessary approval and print the ST/SGB and/or AI
  • Release ST/SGB and/or AI to all offices
  • Proceed with the implementation of ICT greening measures
The ST/SGB and/or AI will be released to all offices within 2 months of approval of this initiative. Implementation will start right after that which will be an ongoing process.
